![]() ![]() ![]() It should have gotten more attention in the text. Since the book is so heavily about sports and a Native American team, I think this isn't a small detail. ![]() I wanted a more definitive stance about why current team names are problematic, and perhaps some allusion to movements to have these names changed like #Change the Mascot. While Sheinkin makes the point that the Carlisle Indians were a team made up of Native American players, unlike today's teams with racist mascots, I felt like that wasn't really good enough. That said, I have a couple issues with the book.įirst, while the issue of naming a sports team after a group of people is touched on, I was hoping for a stronger stance about how harmful and inappropriate some current sports team names are. It's a compelling read with great photos and memorable people. Whether or not you're a football fan, this book does a wonderful job blending a biography of Thorpe, a history of the game, and the story of the United States' forced attempts to "assimilate" Native American youth. I love Sheinkin's writing in general, but Jim Thorpe's story is fascinating. ![]() ![]() ![]() Last week, I did an interview with Joe Abercrombie on my YouTube channel, and it is one of my most treasured experiences as a book reviewer. And I dare say it’s indeed his most well-written book so far. The Wisdom of Crowds, the last book in The Age of Madness trilogy, is up there with the Last Argument of Kings as the best book in The First Law World and his career. Today, that unbending situation changed I’m gratified to say that Abercrombie has done it. ![]() For years I’ve said Abercrombie probably won’t be able to come up with a novel that matched-or topped-the Last Argument of Kings. “What is the point of gathering knowledge if one does not pass it on? What is the point of growing old if one does not try to shape the future?”įor years I’ve mentioned the Last Argument of Kings as Joe Abercrombie’s best book it is a masterwork in grimdark fantasy, in my opinion.
